Cook Islands sculptor and painter Joan Gragg captures and records humorous aspects of Cook Islands culture. Having grown up on Rarotonga, she uses her insight and understanding to interpret the special brand of wit that is typical of Cook Islands everyday life.
Starting 30 years ago as a painter in watercolour and oils, Joan has expanded her media of expression to sculpture, with all types of locally available materials; fresh and dried plants, wire, coral and rock. Nothing that can be woven or modelled is safe from her skillful hands and imagination.
Joan was an early pioneer in the Cook Islands pearl trade, which lead her to establish the popular ‘Beachcomber Pearl and Art brand’ that still exists today. In 2010, Joan Graduated with a Masters in Art & Design from the Auckland University of Technology.
